The blank page problem
If you've ever sat down to practice your German writing and thought, "But what should I write about?" β you're not alone. Self-study learners don't have an instructor handing out prompts, and the blank page becomes a barrier. You know you need to write more, but you don't know where to start.
This is especially true when preparing for Goethe-Institut or TestDaF exams, where the writing section gives you a specific topic, context, and register. You need practice writing within constraints β and that means you need good prompts.
Writing Prompts: matched to your settings
German Writing Coach now includes over 200 writing prompts covering every CEFR level from A1 to C2. When you click Prompt Me on the Coach page, the tool selects a prompt that matches your current settings: your chosen tone (colloquial, neutral, or formal), your context (recruiter email, cover letter, BehΓΆrden, landlord, and more), and your target proficiency level.
The prompts range from everyday tasks at beginner levels (describing your routine, writing to a friend) to demanding B2+ scenarios (structured arguments, formal complaints, cover letters). If the first prompt doesn't inspire you, click Try Another for a different one.
Clean Entry: tracking your progress
When you submit a piece of writing and the grammar checker has nothing to fix, that moment often goes unnoticed. But it deserves recognition! It means your grammar, spelling, and usage were correct.
German Writing Coach now tracks this. When your original text is already grammatically sound, the result card highlights with a green border and a Clean Entry badge. It's a small visual cue that turns an absence (no errors) into a positive signal (you got it right).
For signed-in users, Clean Entries are tracked across your session history. On the History page, you'll see how many Clean Entries you've achieved, across how many days, and out of how many total sessions. This gives you evidence that your writing is improving β that the patterns you've learned are sticking.
Other improvements
The Phrase Bank has been tightened up to focus on genuinely learnable content. Phrases that already appear in your original text β things you already wrote correctly β are now filtered out automatically. The Phrase Bank now shows only the improvements and upgrades from the coached version, making it more relevant and less cluttered.
Try it out
Both features are live now. Head to the Coach page, click Prompt Me to get a writing topic, write your response, and see if you can earn a Clean Entry. If you're signed in, your progress is saved automatically.
As always, the tool is free and the source code is open. If you have feedback on the prompts, suggestions for new contexts, or thoughts on how Clean Entry tracking could be more useful, I'd love to hear from you.
